Culloden & Loch Ness Itinerary

We begin this tour with the drive to Culloden where we take a leisurely stroll around the battlefield (refer to the Culloden Classic itinerary for full details). We then retrace the steps Bonnie Prince Charlie took as he fled the field at the start of his Highland odyssey. We’ll visit the Falls of Fallie, where he crossed the river Nairn and bade his lifeguards farewell, then follow the route of Wade’s military road to Fort Augustus, with a brief photostop at Gortleck House where he met Simon Fraser aka Lord Lovat aka the Old Fox for the one and only time. We continue driving through the majestic Great Glen, stopping in Fort Augustus for lunch and some freetime. Today a bustling little village where the five locks of the Caledonian canal link Loch Ness to Loch Oich, in 1746 it was a British Army fort and garrison, possession of which was hotly disputed with the Jacobites. We’ll see the remnants of the old fort, conveniently situated by one of the best waterside views of Loch Ness.

After lunch we continue heading south to Invergarry Castle, where Bonnie Prince Charlie briefly rested the day after the battle, then make our return via the Loch Garry and Glen Moriston – a route that encapsulates the beauty and soul of the Highlands. We briefly  stop at Roderick MacKenzie’s cairn, who gave his life to protect his Prince, before returning to Inverness along the north-west side of Loch Ness, where a photo with Nessie is guaranteed!.
