The Rash Adventurer was the title of Margaret Forster’s 1973 biography of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, aka Bonnie Prince Charlie. Addressed as ‘His Royal Highness’ by his loyal supporters, or ‘the Young Pretender’ by his many detractors. Not wishing to commit one way or the other, the Provost of Dumfries, writing shortly after those fateful events on Culloden Moor in April 1746, called him ‘that rash adventurer’, a moniker that perfectly captures his travels through Scotland, and one that we have adopted for our tours.
